Villanova earns title, milestone

LAURA SWEENEY had 19 points and eight rebounds as Villanova overcame a late first-half deficit and topped Penn, 48-44, at the Palestra to capture the women's Big 5 championship for the second straight season.

Devon Kane added 11 points for the Wildcats (14-2, 4-0), who became the first club to reach 100 City Series victories. They are 100-36. Saint Joseph's is second with 96 Big 5 wins.

"Winning the Big Five title is always exciting," VU coach Harry Perretta said. "It is a goal for us every year. Tonight's game was a typical Big 5 battle, with both teams playing extremely hard and battling on every possession. We were fortunate to come away with the win."

Alyssa Baron had 18 points for the Quakers (7-7, 1-2), who used a 15-2 run to turn a 16-8 deficit into a 23-18 lead in the final minute of the first half. Villanova then outscored Penn by 23-11 to retake the lead and was never threatened.

* Robyn Parks scored 14 points as visiting VCU held off Temple, 53-51, in an Atlantic 10 game.

Rateska Brown had 22 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists for the Owls (7-9, 1-1).

Janniina Koivunen scored 11 points and Adaeze Alaeze added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams (8-9, 1-1).

* Amber Deane shot 9-for-12 en route to 20 points and 10 rebounds as No. 18 Dayton thrashed visiting La Salle, 95-47.

Ebonee Jones scored 12 points and Brittany Wilson added 10 for the Explorers (5-12, 1-1 A-10).

Olivia Applewhite added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Flyers (14-1, 2-0).
