Cops: Passenger killed when drunk crashes car in Cape May Co.

A Cape May Court House man was charged with driving while intoxicated and manslaughter after he crashed a Jeep and his passenger was killed.

Police in Middle Township, Cape May County, say Bruce Moffitt Jr., 23, was driving the red, Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Shunpike Road about 8:24 p.m. Friday when he lost control.

The vehicle went off the road and crashed into trees.

Responding police arrived and found the badly damaged Jeep in the woods with passenger, Jibreel Masud, 27, inside. Masud was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Police say Moffitt had fled by the time they arrived. He was found after a short search, taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Moffitt was charged with 1st degree aggravated manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death, and drunk driving.

He was placed in Cape May County Correctional Center on $250,000 bail.

This case is being investigated by the Cape May County Prosecutor's office and the Middle Township Major Crime Unit.
