Atlanta turns back Charlotte

The Atlanta Hawks snapped a six-game road losing streak with a 104-92 win Wednesday night over the Charlotte Bobcats.

Josh Smith had 30 points and 13 rebounds, and Kyle Korver added 21 for the Hawks, who led most of the way by a comfortable margin. Charlotte cut the lead to seven with 5 minutes and 40 seconds remaining, but that would be it.

Howard leaving L.A.?

In yet another setback for the sinking Lakers, word is that a disgruntled Dwight Howard may not be staying in Los Angeles.

The all-star center, who's averaging 17.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, is uncomfortable with coach Mike D'Antoni's system and is looking to get out of L.A., reports have said. And with the Feb. 21 trade deadline fast approaching, the Lakers would be wise to consider getting something for Howard - who becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak, however, said a trade was not imminent.

The name game

Since the name "Jazz" was already taken, the New Orleans Hornets will change their name to Pelicans next season, sources told the Associated Press.

The new handle, which honors the state bird, will be made official Thursday, when the club will also unveil its new color scheme: blue, gold, and red. Which, if you think about it, doesn't make a lick of sense since the state bird is the brown pelican.
