S.J. man sentenced in sex-assault of girls, 6 and 8

A South Jersey child molester was sentenced today to six years in prison in the sexual assaults of two neighborhood children.

Juan M. Lopez, 49, of Woolwich, Gloucester County, was convicted in August on the sex-assault charges and related counts for his actions, including indecent exposure and fondling, with an 8-year-old and her 6-year-old sister during the summer of 2010.

The older girl, in a statement read by Assistant Prosecutor Kate Mika, said Lopez "kept telling me not to tell anyone" and feared if anyone found out "they are not going to be my friend."

The younger sister said from therapy, she now knows "it is not my fault. It is his fault." She wanted Lopez "to go to jail forever," Mika told Superior Court Judge Walter L. Marshall Jr.

The conviction was the first for Lopez, who will have to serve a minimum of 85 percent of his sentence and register as a Megan's Law offender when released.
