Camden Catholic wins with McCormick's pin

Posted: January 27, 2013

Mark McCormick isn't known for his pins. Until Saturday, at least.

As the final wrestler for Camden Catholic at the Jack Welch Duals, the freshman stepped into the circle needing a pin to give the Irish their third straight victory in the event.

McCormick delivered, getting a pin at 126 pounds that lifted Camden Catholic to a 33-31 win over Long Branch at Moorestown.

"That's why he came to Camden Catholic, to be in big matches. To have big moments like that," said coach Ryan McCormick, who is no relation.

McCormick said that his young wrestler is having a strong season, but has been more characteristically pulling out close matches.

Saturday, he took control of Aaron Torres early in the match. But a regular decision wouldn't be enough. McCormick needed at least a major decision to force the match to be tied and decided by criteria.

Ryan McCormick's pre-match advice reflected that, telling him to be aggressive and go for the major decision. He did one better, pinning his opponent just before the four-minute mark.

"But I guess he didn't want to settle for criteria," Ryan McCormick said.

In another key match, Camden Catholic's Chad Welsh beat Jake George, 3-1, in sudden victory at 152 pounds.

Earlier in the day, Camden Catholic defeated Cherokee and Moorestown to move to the final. McCormick also had a pin in the Moorestown victory.

Also at the Jack Welch Duals:

Delran coach Dennis Smith became the all-time winningest coach in South Jersey history when Delran beat Newton, 49-30.

The 38-year veteran head coach earned win 602, moving him past retired Highland coach Ralph Ross.

Collingswood had another close loss, falling to Steinert, 34-33 on criteria. Steinert won the most individual matches. In that match, Collingswood's Colin Lex pinned his opponent in 55 seconds.

Tri-County League. Delsea won a pair of matches in a meet at Schalick.

Delsea defeated the host school, 60-12, and beat Woodstown, 45-25.

Also at the meet, Woodstown downed Schalick, 47-16, by dominating at the lighter weight classes.
