Police ID passenger killed in N.J. Turnpike truck crash

A passenger in a tractor-trailer's sleeping berth died when the vehicle overturned and caught fire in a dense fog, according to New Jersey State Police.

The crash occurred about 2 a.m. on the New Jersey Turnpike at milemarker 45.5 in the Mount Holly, Burlington County, area.

The driver of the 2007 Freightliner box truck lost control of the vehicle while driving in the right southbound lane, said Sgt. Adam Grossman, a state police spokesman. The truck struck the guardrail, overturned and became engulfed in fire.

Police identified the driver as 67-year-old Joseph Gaudio, of Asheboro, N.C. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.

His wife, 67-year-old Glenda Gaudio, was killed.

Part of the roadway at exit 5 was closed and two lanes were blocked, causing delays.

A heavy fog had descended on the area overnight, but it's not clear if that played a factor. Grossman said police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
