Fox broadcaster considers N.J. Senate bid

NEWARK, N.J. - Geraldo Rivera, who hosts a weekend show on Fox News Channel, said Thursday that he was seriously thinking about running for a U.S. Senate seat from New Jersey.

"Buckle your seat belts," the broadcaster said before announcing on his radio show on WABC-AM in New York City that he was "truly contemplating" a Senate bid.

A longtime resident of Edgewater, on the Hudson River overlooking Manhattan, Rivera said he had spoken to people in the New Jersey GOP about a run, but did not say what they told him.

He got a mixed response when he asked his 30,000 Twitter followers how they felt about his challenging either Sen. Frank Lautenberg or Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

At 89, Lautenberg is the oldest sitting U.S. senator. The Democrat has not said if he will seek reelection. Booker, also a Democrat, has said he is exploring a run. No Republican has formally announced.

Rivera, 69, said he had commitments to Fox and his radio show, but, "I figure at my age, if I'm going to do it, I've got to do it."
