Renaissance schools still alive

Posted: February 03, 2013

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT announced Friday that it would continue the Renaissance Charter Schools initiative for a fourth straight year.

The district also put out requests for proposals for charter operators who would manage the schools' operations. The district asks potential operators to send a letter of intent by Feb. 8 and the deadline to submit proposals is March 5.

The 2013-2014 Renaissance schools, which are typically low-performing schools in need of a turnaround, will be announced Feb. 11.

The Student Advisory Council from each of the selected Renaissance schools will meet with the "turnaround team" finalists.

Seventeen low-performing schools have been designated Renaissance Charter Schools since 2010, and about 12,000 students are enrolled. The Renaissance schools that began in 2010 and 2011 have demonstrated improvements in academic achievement, school safety and student enrollment from the catchment area, the district said.

Nine of 13 schools increased the number of students who have scored proficient or advanced on state tests in math and/or reading, the district said.

All schools have boosted average daily attendance and reduced out-of-school suspensions.
