Neshaminy High bus victim “badly injured” but “alert”

Posted: February 06, 2013

The family of Matt Cruz, the 16-year old Neshaminy High School sophomore who was injured during a bus crash in Boston over the weekend, released a statement on Tuesday saying that Cruz was "badly injured" but that he is "alert and aware of what's happening."

He is still in critical condition, according to Gina Orlando, a spokesperson for Boston Medical Center, where Cruz is being treated.

The statement, from Cruz's mother Megan, said that the family has received "incredible support" from people in Boston and family and friends in the Philadelphia area.

A candelight vigil was held at Our Lady of Mercy in Penndel on Monday night to pray for Cruz's recovery, and many students have taken to social media to post messages of support, some using the hashtag #PrayForMatt.

The extent of Cruz's injuries is not known. Cruz was one of 42 Bucks County residents on a visit to Harvard University on Saturday with a local nonprofit, the Destined for a Dream Foundation. Around 8:00 p.m., as the bus was headed back to the Philadelphia area, it struck an overhang on Soldiers Field Road along the Charles River in Boston. Thirty-five were injured, including Cruz.

Another person was in fair condition at Brigham and Women's Hospital on Monday, according to a hospital spokesperson. That victim has not been identified.
