Train and subway service ground to a halt Wednesday morning for several hours as a result of a gas leak near the Fern Rock Transportation Center.
SEPTA trains and subways that were suspended around 9 a.m. resumed service shortly before 1 p.m.
Philadelphia Fire Department officials said about 190 people were evacuated, including the occupants of several houses and 157 SEPTA employees. All were allowed to return to homes and workplaces before noon.
Several nearby houses were evacuated briefly as Philadelphia Gas Works workers shut off a leaking main supplying a SEPTA maintenance shop near Fern Rock.
Service was halted on the Broad Street Line north of Erie for local service and Olney for express service from about 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Service was also halted on the Broad-Ridge Spur.
