Kelly has never coached in the NFL. But he made sure he hired lieutenants with vast experience coaching at the top level.
Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has worked in the NFL for 14 seasons. His first stop was in Philadelphia as part as Andy Reid's first staff. Shurmur coached tight ends (1999-2001) and quarterbacks (2002-08) for the Eagles before becoming the Rams offensive coordinator for two seasons and then the Browns head coach for the next two.
Kelly chose Bill Davis, who has 21 years of NFL coaching experience, to be his defensive coordinator. The 47-year old spent the last two seasons as the Browns linebackers coach but has two stints as a coordinator (49ers, 2005-06; Cardinals, 2009-10) under his belt.
Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp was the assistant special teams coach in Miami for the last two seasons and before that in San Francisco for three seasons.
There were few surprises elsewhere. Most of Kelly's moves had been reported, but the team held off confirmation because the new coach wanted to announce his staff as a unit. Kelly will hold a news conference at the NovaCare Complex on Monday at 1:30 p.m., and his assistants will meet with reporters afterward.
Defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro was one of Kelly's first reported hires. He oversaw the same group at Oregon but will also be an assistant head coach with the Eagles.
Graduate assistants Greg Austin (assistant offensive line), Erik Chinander (assistant defensive line), Matthew Harper (assistant special teams), and Lyght also come from Oregon. Lyght played cornerback in the NFL for 12 seasons.
Aside from the coordinators, Bob Bicknell (wide receivers), Bill Lazor (quarterbacks), John Lovett (defensive backs), Ted Williams (tight ends), John Hingst (strength and conditioning) and Staley have prior NFL experience. Only Bicknell, who was in Buffalo for the last three years, coached in the NFL last season.
Lazor comes from Virginia, where he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He previously worked for the Seahawks, Redskins, and Falcons. Lovett has coached at the collegiate level for most of his career, lastly at Texas Tech, but served as a defensive quality control coach for the New York Jets in 1984.
Williams, who is the longest-tenured coach in Eagles history, will move from running backs to tight ends, where he coached originally when he joined Ray Rhodes' staff in 1995. Hingst was the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Jaguars last season.
Bill McGovern (outside linebackers), Rick Minter (inside linebackers), and Jeff Stoutland (offensive line) are longtime college coaches. McGovern comes from Boston College, Minter from Kentucky and Stoutland from Alabama.
Mike Dawson (defensive quality control) was most recently the special teams coach at Boston College. Justin Peelle (assistant tight ends), who played at Oregon from 1998-2001, just finished a 10-year career as an NFL tight end. Press Taylor (offensive quality control) comes from Tulsa, where he was a quarterbacks coach.
Chris Peduzzi, who spent the last 14 seasons on the Eagles athletic training staff, was named head athletic trainer.
And then there's Shaun Huls, he of the sports science coordinator title. Huls' previous stop was as the head strength and conditioning coach and combatives coordinator for Navy Special Warfare.
According to the Eagles, Huls "has trained numerous current NFL players, professional baseball players, MMA fighters, track and field, wrestling and swimming Olympians" and is "a champion collegiate Olympic lifter and Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor."
Cole surgery. Trent Cole recently underwent minor hand surgery, according to a source close to the Eagles defensive end. The injury could sideline Cole for part of the spring, but he should be back in time for minicamp in early May.
