Shipley girls roll to Friends title

Sox Alexander scored a game-high 18 points, and Shipley built a quick lead and coasted past Abington Friends, 61-31, Saturday at Haverford College to capture its third straight Friends Schools League girls' basketball title.

Alexander, a junior point guard who has committed to St. John's, dished out six assists and recorded three steals. Martine Fortune added 12 points, Asia Baker chipped in with 11 points, and Colleen Walsh scored nine.

"It's good that the girls get a reward for working as hard as they have," said Shipley assistant coach Kevin Costello, brother of head coach Sean Costello. "They've come out this week and played really hard. The work's really paying off."

Shipley led by 22-4 after one quarter, by 36-13 at halftime, and by 51-15 entering the final period.

Fortune, a sophomore forward, also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Lauren Gold led Abington Friends with 12 points.
