Smidgeons of celebrity
Reports say "SideShow" favorite Christina Applegate has quit her troubled NBC comedy Up All Night. Waaah! That show has been through more changes than the baby. . . . NBC, the network where good ideas go to die, also axed hyperlocal website EveryBlock, Adrian Holovaty's brainchild. R.I.P. . . . A leaked photo: Kate Upton is, once again, on the cover of Sports Illustrated's tasteful, non-soft-porn swimsuit issue. . . . Pattie Mallette, mama to Justin Bieber, when asked what she thinks about her son's getting snubbed with no Grammy noms: "I think they blew it." . . . John Mayer says, correctly, that he "was a jerk" in his previous uphookings with stars like Jessica Simpson. He seems happy outhanging with Katy Perry. . . . So the film Lincoln, written by Pulitzer Prize guy Tony Kushner, shows Connecticut's congressguys voting against a constitutional amendment that outlawed slavery. Mwa mwa mwa (fail trombone)!!! But then Rep. Joe Courtney, Democrat, saw the flick, checked the history, and found out that all four Nutmeg State reps voted for it. Ahem! Kushner apologized and said he hoped it could be corrected pre-DVD. . . . In a tradition championed by Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Bieber, strange-rocker Marilyn Manson barfed and collapsed onstage Wednesday night in Saskatoon, Canada, rock capital of . . . of . . . Saskatchewan. Manson is feeling better, we're told, but what a trouper. Rihanna, Adele, and Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon are others who have also observed this time-honored rock ritual. The shower must go on . . . We report with relief: That whole Facebook thing about a Taylor Swift/ Harry Styles sex tape was just a phishing scam. . . . It's the meme that will not die!!! "Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?" Since 2003, this silly thing has been whirling around, getting answers from celebs like Bill Nye the Science Guy (big duck would implode, little horsies freeze to death), Nicholas Kristof (big duck), President Obama (mum), and the Mythbusters guys, Jamie Hyneman (little horsies) and Adam Savage (big duck). We can't decide, we just can't. . . .
KYW awards budding journos
On Thursday, KYW awarded the Richard Monetti Scholarship to Kimberly Coterwas, a junior at Oxford Area High School. She was among the 86 grads of the station's 2012 Newstudies program. Monetti was a 1986 program grad who died in the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland; his parents were on hand at the announcement. Ten other students got achievement awards, and a paid internship went to Ryan Armstrong of Clearview Regional High School.
