'Creature' feature
Starving for "The Hunger Games"? Warner Brothers is hoping the next YA sensation to hit the big screen is "Beautiful Creatures," based on novels by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, in theaters Thursday.
"Creatures" is about a Ethan ( Alden Ehrenreich), a small-town Southern boy who falls for the mysterious Lena ( Alice Englert), a Caster (or witch, if you want to get impolite). Lena wrestles with her destiny as her 16th birthday approaches, and she's chosen for the Light or the Dark.
"It's very different from other teen franchises," Zoey Deutch, who plays the stuck-up Emily in the film, told me while she was in Philly. "It's from a male's perspective so it's about a guy chasing a girl, rather than girl being at his beck and call."
"Beautiful Creatures" has a heavy-hitting cast, including Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons and Viola Davis.
"We were trying to do an Oscar count," said Thomas Mann, who plays Ethan's buddy Link, an innocent bystander seduced by a campy Emmy Rossum ("Shameless"). "We were constantly trying to hold our own. It's really the best acting experience you can ask for."
The Macy's at the Cherry Hill Mall will get Beautified tomorrow. Find someone in a "Beautiful Creatures" tee between 6 and 8 p.m. and say "I want to be Claimed" to receive a black velvet-wrapped heart-shaped box filled with chocolates, half light, half dark.
* The Free Library of Philadelphia announced that "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer will be at the Free Library's Central Branch for a book-signing at 11 a.m. on Fri., Feb 22. She'll be promoting her next book-to-movie adaptation, "The Host."
'Idol' gals
"American Idol" sways to the beat of the sounds of Philadelphia Wednesday, when local contestants perform on the first night of Hollywood week.
Keep an eye out for Bucks County's Courtney Calle, 16, a Council Rock North junior, and Taylor Rand, 19, a waitress at Chickie's & Pete's and bartender at Italian Market spot Connie's Ric Rac every Thursday.
We hear that both Philly ladies get screen time on Wednesday's telecast. Check 'em out on Fox at 8 p.m.
