Consecutive pins by Jarred Alwan at 220 pounds and Jeff Miller at 285 gave the Irish a 36-24 lead with two matches remaining. Needing 12 points in two bouts, DePaul (13-7) got a pin from Will Kui at 106 over Joseph Cahill in 4 minutes, 29 seconds. The title match came down to the final bout at 113 pounds. Camden Catholic's Tyler McBride pinned Kevin Keaveney in 52 seconds to clinch the championship.
"I didn't want to do anything stupid," McBride said of his thoughts before the bout. "I also knew I had to get the job done."
DePaul has been a frequent foe for Camden Catholic (21-4). This was the fourth straight season that the teams wrestled for a state championship.
"They're an up-and-coming program," McCormick said. "They're constantly improving, they have a pretty young team, they return a lot of guys next year, so probably with any luck we'll see them again."
In the Group II semifinal, Delsea (24-2) fell to High Point, 37-28. Each team won seven bouts, but High Point (19-4) collected crucial bonus points with a major decision and five pins. Connor McHugh registered the quickest pin for the Wildcats, winning in 34 seconds over Jordan Bouillon at 126. The Crusaders picked up pins from Bryan Dobzanski at 285 and Tom Carney at 113. High Point captured the Group II championship.
Paulsboro (20-3) was knocked out in the Group I semifinals by Bound Brook, 53-9. The Crusaders' Isaiah Soto opened the match by pinning Tyler Adams in 1:18 at 170, and Bound Brook (27-3) never looked back, winning seven straight weight classes from 195 to 126. Bound Brook won the Group I title.
