Episcopal's Gallagher to help coach Stars & Stripes

Posted: February 20, 2013

The Stars & Stripes youth football team will return to Italy to face the Italian under-19 national team on April 13 in Turin in the 2013 Global Bowl, and Episcopal coach Bill Gallagher is set to coach the running backs and linebackers.

The Stars & Stripes roster is expected to be announced in the next few weeks. Last year, players were selected from 20 high schools in eight states. In beating the Italian under-19 national team, 50-0, Shawn Wilson of Malvern Prep was named offensive MVP after gaining 170 yards and scoring two touchdowns on just 10 carries.

From April 6 through 14, the American players will combine practices with sight-seeing in Florence and Rome.

Global Football, based in Texas, is in its 18th year of taking players overseas to experience travel, competition and service. Players are selected for their conduct on and off the field, and their goal is to help develop football programs and awareness outside the United States.

Gallagher played in the same backfield as Global Football president Patrick Steenberge at Notre Dame and has traveled with Global Football to France, Germany, Italy and Ireland.

Jeff Scurran of Catalina Foothills High School (Ariz.) is the head of the six-coach staff.
