College Basketball: Wake Forest stuns Miami

Posted: February 24, 2013

Miami guard Shane Larkin noticed during warm-ups Saturday that something was off. The up-tempo Hurricanes seemed a step slow and not entirely ready to play.

And so it was: No. 2 Miami saw its unbeaten start to Atlantic Coast Conference play, 14-game winning streak, and highest-ever national ranking come to an end with a surprisingly lopsided 80-65 loss to host Wake Forest.

Miami (22-4, 13-1) never got closer than 11 in the second half and was outrebounded 36-35 by the Demon Deacons (12-14, 5-9).

VCU 75, Xavier 71 - The No. 24 Rams overcame a 17-point deficit in the second half to beat the host Musketeers. Troy Daniels scored 19 points for Virginia Commonwealth (22-6, 10-3 Atlantic Ten), which forced 12 turnovers during their big comeback. Xavier fell to 15-11, 8-5.

Louisville 79, Seton Hall 61 - The unranked Pirates matched the No. 10 Cardinals for about 10 minutes, then they were overwhelmed by relentless pressure and a 23-7 run. In the end, the host Cardinals (22-5, 10-4 Big East) won their third in a row, and Seton Hall fell to 13-15, 2-13.

Georgetown 57, Syracuse 46 - The No. 8 Orange (which joins the ACC in July) lost their final Big East game against the Hoyas at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse (22-5, 10-4 Big East) used its home-crowd advantage to run off a 10-2 spurt early and finish the half with a 23-21 lead. But in the second half, it was all No. 11 Hoyas (21-4, 11-3) all the time.

Women

St. John's 61, Rutgers 48 - The Red Storm denied Scarlet Knights coach C. Vivian Stringer her 900th career victory with a pounding of the visitors.

Nadirah McKenith scored 21 points to lead St. John's (15-10, 9-4 Big East) to its fifth straight win. Rutgers (14-12, 5-8) has lost four straight since Stringer recorded her 899th win. She is seeking to become just the fourth women's coach to reach the milestone.

Penn 66, Columbia 48 - The Quakers won their fifth game in a row, slamming the Lions in Ivy League action at the Palestra. Penn (14-9, 6-2) had a 35-27 lead at the half and then poured it on. Columbia (3-19, 1-7) never had a chance.
