When Ashley Logue took over as head coach of the Prep Charter girls' basketball team in December, she told the Huskies they would have to step it up.

An assistant with the Huskies for the last two seasons, Logue took over for Paul Rieser, who left the position for personal reasons.

Each player involved with the program did her part, Logue said, and that resulted Sunday in the Huskies' winning the Public League championship. Prep Charter earned its third consecutive title by defeating Central, 56-37, at Temple's Liacouras Center.

"These girls all have their own individual styles, and when we bring them all together they are just really hard to beat," Logue said.

The first half was plagued by a lot of early turnovers, with each side making unforced mistakes. The game was close for the first 16 minutes, with the largest lead for the Huskies (18-2) at five points. Prep Charter led by 22-19 at the break.

Symantha Marrero scored 12 first-half points, knocking down four three-pointers for the Lancers (15-6). The junior guard finished with 18 points.

Ciani Cryor (20 points) led Prep Charter at both ends of the court, creating opportunities for her teammates on offense and pacing her squad on defense. She was named the game's MVP.

Cryor "is an amazing player," Logue said. "She's only a sophomore; she plays so much older than she is. She does everything for us."

In the first half, the Lancers played tough defense, not allowing the Huskies much penetration in the lane, which led to many missed jumpers and a change of strategy at the half.

Logue told her team to stop settling for jump shots, and the Huskies came out a different team in the third quarter. Prep Charter spread the floor more, said junior guard Ciera Nimmons, who finished with 17 points.

The Huskies will play the Archbishop Wood-Cardinal O'Hara winner for the PIAA District 12 title on Friday.
