Bucks sugar plant where man died had violations

Posted: February 28, 2013

The Falls Township sugar plant where a man died Monday after falling into a sugar vat had recorded 10 worker safety violations in 2010, according to records from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The violations - six listed as serious, four in the category "other" - ranged from hazards involving personal protective equipment, record-keeping issues, and problems with fire extinguishers, records show. The violations were recorded during an inspection by the agency when the plant was located in Swedesboro.

The worker who died Monday was identified as Janio Salinas-Valerda, 50, of Edgewater, N.J., by the Bucks County Coroner's Office. Autopsy results were not available Tuesday, but on Monday, Joseph Campbell, the coroner, said that Valerda fell into a sugar hopper while trying to unclog it from a catwalk with a large pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Campbell said. - Chris Palmer
