Muslum Gurses, 59, a Turkish singer adored by many for his melancholic, Arabic-inspired songs, died Sunday of heart failure at an Istanbul hospital.
Mr. Gurses, nicknamed "Muslum Baba" or "Papa Muslum," had been hospitalized since bypass surgery in November.
He was best known for his mournful tunes blending Turkish folk instruments with Arabic melodies and recorded more than a dozen albums. Some fans have been so enthralled by his songs that they earned a reputation for cutting themselves with razor blades at his concerts. - AP
