Mike Magee had a hat trick as the Los Angeles Galaxy began their post-David Beckham era Sunday with a season-opening 4-0 rout of the Chicago Fire in Carson, Calif.

The two-time defending Major League Soccer champions also got a late goal from Robbie Keane.

In Portland, Ore., an own goal by New York defender Jamison Olave gave the host Timbers a 3-3 tie with the Red Bulls.

In Saturday's late games, the visiting Montreal Impact beat the Seattle Sounders on a goal by Davy Arnaud, while the Columbus Crew got goals from Federico Higuain, Josh Williams, and Dominic Oduro in a 3-0 pasting of Chivas USA in Carson.

Altidore sets record. U.S. striker Jozy Altidore scored his 24th goal in AZ Alkmaar's 2-1 loss at RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch league, breaking Clint Dempsey's record for most goals by an American in a European club season.

The 23-year-old tied the score in the 69th minute, chipping past keeper Jeroen Zoet with a left-footed shot from about 12 yards out. Altidore has 17 league goals to go with seven in the Dutch Cup.

Dempsey had 23 goals for Fulham last season in the English Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League.

Spurs top Gunners. Tottenham's Gareth Bale scored in his fifth consecutive Premier League game to send the Spurs on their way to a 2-1 home win over north London rival Arsenal.
