Injury sidelines La Salle's Steve Zack

Posted: March 05, 2013

LA SALLE sophomore big man Steve Zack, who suffered what coach John Giannini called "a sprained ligament in his foot" during Saturday's win over Duquesne, will not play in the Explorers' final two games, Wednesday at home against George Washington and then Saturday at Atlantic 10 leader Saint Louis.

Zack is getting around in a walking boot and will be re-evaluated in a week. The sophomore has been an integral part of the rotation this season. After a freshman season in which he showed flashes, Zack (6.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 54.5 percent shooting in 22 minutes per game) has become a serious factor. He will be missed against GW, where the coach expected he would get even more minutes because of matchups.

So La Salle, which always plays three guards and sometimes four, will be even smaller against the Colonials and Billikens.

"He makes your offense flow; he's a great screener, he understands where to be on the court offensively and defensively," Giannini said.

The good news, according to the coach, is that there are no torn ligaments. It is just about rest and putting as little pressure as possible on the foot. Meanwhile, La Salle, on the cusp of its first NCAA berth in 21 years, will just have to play through it and hope Zack gets back for next weekend's A-10 Tournament.

How important has Zack been this season?

According to the coach, La Salle's plus/minus charts show that "he may be one of our two or three most valuable players."
