Nor’easter leaves trail of damage at Shore

Water on roadways was also forcing closures in towns including Monmouth Beach, Absecon, Aberdeen, Egg Harbor Township and Wildwood. A coastal flood warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Friday, but forecasters were not expecting Thursday's wind to be as strong as Wednesday, when gusts exceeding 60 mph were recorded in many places along the ocean. OCEAN CITY - A section of roof on an Asbury Avenue eatery that was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy was torn off during a nor'easter that lasted from Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning and pummeled the entire New Jersey Shore.

About 2,000 utility customers remained without power on Thursday in the four Shore counties - Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May - down from as many as 50,000 homes and businesses left in the dark at the height of the storm.

High winds in excess of 60 m.p.h. damaged the roof on Yanni's Café, in the 800 block of Asbury Avenue, as well as the roofs of a lifeguard station in Atlantic City and a condo in Stone Harbor. Crews were called a vacant warehouse in Sea Bright where downed electric lines sparked a fire.

In Mantoloking - hard hit by Sandy in October - Route 35 was temporarily closed when high surf breached dunes and flooded the roadway with three feet of water.

But officials up and down the coast said damage overall had been limited to mostly moderate street flooding, downed power lines, and minor to moderate beach erosion.
