Penn, Lehigh, and Syracuse emerged as the winners Saturday in the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic Lacrosse Tournament at PPL Park.

Penn defeated Villanova, 13-9, in the only match featuring two area teams. The Quakers (4-1), who had been looking to avenge last year's last-second loss to the Wildcats (1-4), fell behind by two in the first period before going on a tear. Nick Doktor and Zack Losco each scored three goals for Penn.

Lehigh got by Penn State, 12-10, in a matchup of two rising powers in the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions (2-3) lost the game in the final period when they were outscored 6-4 by the Mountain Hawks. T.J. Sanders scored five times to lead Penn State.

Lehigh, which got three goals each from Patrick Corbett and Dante Fantoni, improved to 4-3.

In the first game, Syracuse beat St. John's, 13-11, in a rematch of last season's Big East championship game, won by the Orange.

Kieran McArdle scored four goals and Kevin Cernuto three for the Red Storm (3-2). Syracuse (3-1) was led by Derek Maltz (three goals), and Scott Loy and Luke Cometti, who scored two each.
