Delco: Funds for lead paint removal

Posted: March 12, 2013

Funds for removal of lead-based paint are available for Delaware County families who meet eligibility requirements, officials announced.

The Community Action Agency of Delaware County is currently accepting applications for the free program that will provide about $5,000 to replace older windows, doors, trim, molding and drywall that has been painted with a lead-based product. Families must have a child under age six, and meet income requirements. The program serves about 20 families a year.

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead which is known to have negative heath effects including learning disabilities, and behavioral problems.

Residents of Upper Darby and Haverford Townships, and the City of Chester have a separate program through the municipalities and are not eligible.
