Phillies ship five players to minor league camp

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Phillies made five more cuts Tuesday, jettisoning righthanders Tyler Cloyd and B.J. Rosenberg, lefthander Mauricio Robles, outfielder Tyson Gillies and catcher Sebastian Valle to minor league camp.

Valle and Gillies had just arrived back from the World Baseball Classic, where they both took part in the melee between teams Mexico and Canada.

Here's what we saw from each of the players who were cut:

* Righthander Tyler Cloyd: He was sidetracked by a bout with forearm tightness but appeared in three games, logging five innings and allowing six runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. He recorded nine groundouts, four outs in the air, and one home runs. He will start the season at Triple A Lehigh Valley and will be one of the top candidates for a promotion if injuries strike.

* Righthander B.J. Rosenberg: Like Cloyd, he spent time with the Phillies last year, and like Cloyd, he battled some minor arm trouble during camp. Rosenberg had a tough go of it, allowing 11 runs, nine of them earned, on 12 hits and three walks with no strikeouts and a home run allowed in 3 1/3 innings of Grapefruit League play. He figures to enter the season no higher than third on the depth chart for a promotion should injuries strike the bullpen (whichever two of Mike Stutes, Phillippe Aumont and Justin De Fratus do not make the majors).

* Lefthander Mauricio Robles: A waiver claim from the Mariners, Robles appeared in only one Grapefruit League game, retiring all three batters he faced. The Phillies have an abundance of lefties in their system.

* Centerfielder Tyson Gillies: The 24-year-old, whose career has been plagued by hamstring strains, stayed healthy but didn't do much at the plate, going 1-for-9 with a double and five strkeouts in Grapefruit League play.

* Catcher Sebastian Valle: He got only one at-bat in Grapefruit League play and is clearly behind Tommy Joseph on the organizational depth chart at this point. A definite trade candidate, although he does not have much in the way of value at this point.
