Two teams beat a state record in the same race Friday at Bucknell University, and Upper Dublin came out as the team with more reason to celebrate.
The Cardinals' 200-yard medley relay quartet won by 23 hundredths of a second at the PIAA Class AAA boys' swimming and diving championships.
Robert Bantley, Cooper Tollen, Michael Jensen, and Eric Jensen registered a time of 1 minute, 31.28 seconds, setting a state record.
The mark had been held by La Salle, which set it in 2011 with a time of 1:31.94. The Cardinals barely edged the Explorers, who came in second at 1:31.51, topping their own previous state record.
Upper Dublin won another title in the 200-yard freestyle with a first-place finish by Bantley in 1:37.12. Eric Jensen came in second at 1:38.93.
La Salle's Sean Regan won the 100 butterfly title in 48.84 seconds. Michael Jensen of Upper Dublin nabbed third place (49.61). La Salle also placed in the 200 freestyle relay, earning second place with a time of 1:23.40.
In the 200 individual medley, Thomas McCormick of West Chester Henderson earned third-place honors with a time of 1:50.87. Coming up behind him was Hatboro-Horsham's Michael Thomas, who clocked in at 1:51.03.
La Salle led the team scoring halfway through the two-day meet, with 163 points. Upper Dublin is in third place with 98.
The boys' diving championships will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with the swimming finals starting at 8:15.
In the girls' championships:
Marie Yacopino of North Penn came in second in the 1-meter diving with a score of 443.35. Lower Merion's Carolyn Howard was in third at 438.50.
Christina Leander of West Chester East clinched third place in the 100 butterfly with a 54.89. The Vikings also placed in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:47.35.
In the 200 freestyle relay, North Penn earned second place with a time of 1:34.19.
North Penn is third in the team scoring with 84 points. The finals will resume at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
