A 54-year-old Winslow Township man has been charged in the hit-and-run death late Saturday in the township of an immigrant from Africa, authorities said Monday. An anonymous tip led investigators to Joseph D. Thornton's home, where they found his 1992 Pontiac Grand Am with visible damage Sunday, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release.

Thornton, of Mary Court, was charged with death by auto and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He was being held in Camden County Jail on $185,000 bail.

Ezekiel Tomboyeke, 59, of Chesilhurst, who fled a civil war in his native Sierra Leone, was fatally injured about 11:25 p.m. Saturday when struck by a car while walking westbound on Pump Branch Road, police said. He was pronounced dead at Virtua Hospital in Berlin. - Inquirer staff
