Gatorade has named guard Stephen Vasturia, of St. Joseph's Prep, Pennsylvania's Boys Basketball Player of the Year. The award, as noted in the announcement, recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court.

Vasturia, a 6-5 senior, averaged 20.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists and routinely guarded the opposing teams' top players.

Other recent winners out of the Catholic League: Ss. Neumann-Goretti's Tony Chennault in 2010; Roman Catholic's Maalik Wayns in '08 and Monsignor Bonner's Jeff Jones in '07.

Vasturia is now eligible for the national award, which will be announced later this month.

In other basketball news, Jasmine Williams, a star guard there (class of '97), is West Catholic's new basketball coach.
