Villanova vs. North Carolina: Juliano's take

Posted: March 22, 2013

Villanova didn't come up with a particularly good matchup when it drew the Tar Heels in its NCAA tournament opener.

North Carolina spreads the floor with three-point shooters and has a pair of talented ballhandling guards in Dexter Strickland and Marcus Paige.

If there's one thing the Wildcats, who ranked last in the Big East this season in defending the three, have had trouble with this season, it's been recovering to get out to the shooters along the three-point arc after collapsing into the paint to stop a guard's penetration to the rim.

The Wildcats will try to capitalize on Carolina's smaller lineup, pounding the ball inside to JayVaughn Pinkston and Mouphtaou Yarou.

In doing that, and driving the ball to the basket at every opportunity, they hope to get to the foul line; they are among the top teams in the nation in free throws made.

However, the Cats also must handle the Tar Heels' defensive pressure and take care of the basketball to prevent their high-scoring opponent from getting easy baskets in transition.
