A 17-year-old Willingboro High School student was fatally struck in a strip mall parking lot late Friday, police said today.

De'Jour Benson was transported to Cooper University Hospital after he was hit by a vehicle shortly before 11:30 p.m. in the East Ridge Plaza parking lot on the 600 block of Beverly-Rancocas Road, Willingboro police said.

Benson later died at the hospital.

The circumstances of the incident were not clear. The accident remains under investigation by the Willingboro police and Burlington County Prosecutor's Office. No charges have been filed at this time, authorities said.

The Willingboro school district identified him as a senior on its website. His father, Kevin, is one of the high school's security officers, the district said.

His funeral program indicates that Benson died on Saturday.

Tributes to Benson have popped up on social media. On Facebook, The De'Jour Benson Memorial Fund page was created.

On Twitter, people tweeted condolences, some using the hastag RIPDejour, and posted pictures, including one with Benson wearing a Willingboro football uniform.

"Cant picture officer Benson without Dejour," one person tweeted on Sunday.

Someone else tweeted today: "continuing to pray for all the family and young people affected by the loss of this young life."
