Wichita State coach has change of plans

LIFE IS FULL of unexpected surprises.

Just ask Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall, whose Shockers are in the NCAA Final Four after winning the West Regional with victories over Pittsburgh, Gonzaga, La Salle and Ohio State.

Prior to Selection Sunday, Marshall canceled his trip to Atlanta - site of the Final Four - so that he could attend his daughter's volleyball tournament in Kansas City.

"Lynn [Marshall's wife] and I just looked at each other and said, 'You know what, we're not going to the Final Four this year,' " Marshall told Bob Lutz of the Wichita Eagle. "We'll go to Napa or somewhere later on, a beach vacation, but we're just not gonna go to the Final Four. The seats they give you in those domed stadiums - you can't even see the games."

That's no longer a problem. Marshall will be able to see the action just fine from his courtside bench in the Georgia Dome.

Undies I

Some athletes are quirky.

They wear the same socks for days at a time. They eat the same foods during winning streaks. They grow beards during the playoffs . . .

In the case of Mets starter Jon Niese, however, it's his wife who is the superstitious one.

Leah Niese recently told the New York Post that when Jon takes the mound against the visiting Padres this afternoon she will be wearing blue undies.

"I have lucky underwear - they're Mets underwear," Leah, 23, said.

Mets underwear? Does that mean they won't last a full season?

Undies II

Golfer Andrea Harto decided to play his ball from the edge of the water on the 14th hole of the Trophée Hassan II tournament in Morocco on Sunday.

Most golfers would just remove their shoes and socks. But Harto took off his pants, too.

He hit the ball to within 15 feet of the hole. Then, while still in his boxers, walked to the green and marked the ball.

Thankfully, he put his pants back on to putt.
