Achraf Yacoubou leaving Villanova

Posted: April 05, 2013

Sophomore guard Achraf Yacoubou has decided to transfer from Villanova, according to several web reports.

The 6-foot-4 Yacoubou, the New York state player of the year in 2011, averaged 2.9 points and 2.6 rebounds in 31 games for the Wildcats this season. He was fourth on the team with 21 three-point baskets, shooting nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc, and had a season-high 13 points in a win last December over Penn.

He saw his playing time decrease toward the end of the season, however, and did not play in three of Villanova's last six games.

CBSSports.com broke the news of the transfer. Yacoubou later confirmed to Zagsblog that he had received his release from Villanova. He said he wanted to play more.

"Since there are freshmen coming in, and they are mostly guards, I felt it was best for me to leave," he told the website in a text. "I thank them for the opportunity to play at 'Nova, but it's time to move on."

Yacoubou said he was interested in Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Georgia Tech, Miami, and UNLV.

Through a spokesman, Villanova coach Jay Wright declined comment.
