Mr. Dougherty was one of the first district managers of Eagle Snacks, owned by Anheuser Busch, in the early 1980s. He held other jobs before becoming an account executive for Verizon from 1991 to 2007.
For the last decade, Mr. Dougherty was vice president of the board of directors of the Upper Darby Belltellco Federal Credit Union, a volunteer position.
Illness forced his retirement in 2011 as supervisor of the front desk at the St. Joseph's athletic complex. He had worked there a year.
His brother said Mr. Dougherty was very gregarious.
"He had a love of life, and loved sharing that with others. That's why he got into coaching," Larry Dougherty said.
His activities as a coach spanned two decades: in 1980 for the AAU basketball championship for girls ages 12 and under; in 1982 as assistant girls' basketball coach at Archbishop Carroll High School; and for St. Alice Catholic Youth Organization in the 1980s and 1990s. He also was a local CYO commissioner in the 1990s.
In addition to his brother, he is survived by his wife, the former Anne Kossey; his mother, Jane Dougherty; son Jimmy; daughter Colleen; two other brothers, Brian and Brendan; and a sister, Mary Ficco. He was previously married to Michelle Morley, who also survives, as well as children AJ Dougherty and Shannon Crowley, and two grandchildren.
