S. Jersey Girls: Egg Harbor storms past Mainland for softball win

The Egg Harbor Township softball team was two outs away from defeat on Tuesday afternoon when its bats suddenly came alive.

The Eagles strung together five hits to score four runs and rally for an 8-5 victory at Mainland in a Cape-Atlantic American softball game.

Jess Wollowitch led off the inning with a double. After an out, Kate Korte, Macy Stratten, Zoe Robertson, Irvin Hunter, and Nicole Wisser had consecutive hits.

Also in Cape-Atlantic American play:

Vineland scored three runs in the top of the eighth to win at Hammonton, 4-2. Bridgette Garvey went 3 for 4 with a run scored and a double. Liz Carpani was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Demi Murray went the distance for the win, allowing six hits and striking out four.

Buena pounded out 20 hits in a 26-4 defeat of visiting Lower Cape May. Victoria Battelini tripled, and Ashley Surran had a double.

Cape-Atlantic National. Rosie LaGrotta struck out seven to improve to 3-0 as Sacred Heart beat visiting Ocean City, 2-1. Sam Caterina doubled home Kayla Smith with the go-ahead run in the fourth inning. Smith, who also doubled, went 3 for 4.

Brittany Robertson's two-run single in the fourth was the difference in Middle Township's 3-1 win over visiting Wildwood Catholic. Maddie Ellis and Alyssa Discepola each had two hits for Middle Township, and Ellis scored twice.

Burlington Patriot. Kelsey Snyder doubled twice and Laura Gold tripled to key Burlington Township's 7-5 win at Delran. Winning pitcher Nicole Nixon also doubled.

Hannah Gavin doubled and drove in two runs as host Bordentown edged Cinnaminson, 4-3, in nine innings.

Burlington Liberty. Morgan Clauser tossed seven sparkling innings in Northern Burlington's 6-1 defeat of visiting Pennsauken. Clauser didn't allow an earned run and gave up just two hits. She struck out seven. Meghin Stanton homered.

Burlington Freedom. Florence's Lacey Olaff dominated in a 9-1 victory at Holy Cross. Olaff surrendered one earned run on three hits and struck out nine. Gina Bruno went 3 for 4 with a triple, run scored, and an RBI.

Olympic American. Madison Morano and Meg Parker carried the offense for Eastern in a 6-1 win at Cherokee. Morano went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs, and Parker was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Emily Serta and Kelly Fitzpatrick tripled.

Nonleague. Alicia DeFlaviis and Kellie Brining each had two hits and knocked in two runs to lead host Cherry Hill West host Cherry Hill East, 10-1.

Rachael McClaskey tripled, scored two runs, and had an RBI to carry Overbrook past visiting Pennsville, 7-6. McClaskey went 2 for 3. Amanda Handfield was 3 for 4, and Alexandra Pio had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.

Amy Loyola earned the pitching win and doubled as Camden Academy Charter beat Pennsauken Tech, 9-7.
