Police: Woman gives birth, pretends to find baby

Posted: April 16, 2013

A 19-year-old woman taking a bath early Sunday morning gave birth to a 6-pound baby girl she didn't know she was expecting, police said. She cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the newborn in a sheet, took her into the backyard of her Northwest Philadelphia home, and then reported a crying child to police, authorities said.

The woman, who was not identified, was bathing around 4:30 a.m. at home on the 2900 block of Bonsall Street when she got out to use the toilet and gave birth. After taking the child into the yard in a sheet, police said, she told her mother she heard a crying baby. The two brought the child back inside and called police.

The newborn was in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, police said. The child's mother was in stable condition at Temple University Hospital, police said.

No charges were filed Sunday, police said.
