Kimmel books 'Mormon'

THE SMASH musical comedy "The Book of Mormon" heads up a particularly strong 2013-14 roster of shows presented by the Kimmel Center under the newly minted "Broadway Philadelphia" banner.

Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone - the brains behind "South Park" - "Book of Mormon," which captured nine Tony Awards in 2012, tells the tuneful, mirthful tale of a pair of young Mormon missionaries in Uganda. It is set for a six-week Forrest Theatre run, beginning July 29, 2014.

For those with more traditional aesthetic leanings, the lineup also boasts "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess." The acclaimed revival/reinvention of the legendary 1930s folk opera is scheduled Feb. 18-23 at the Academy of Music. The Academy also will host: "Once" (Oct. 29-Nov. 10); "Flashdance The Musical" (Nov. 19-24); "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" (Nov. 26-Dec. 1); the Queen-derived "We Will Rock You" (Jan. 14-19); "Mamma Mia!" (Feb. 25-March 2): "The Phantom of the Opera" (March 19-April 13); Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Wizard of Oz" (June 3-8, 2014); "Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles" (June 13-15, 2014); and "Evita" (June 18-22, 2014).

The "Broadway Philadelphia" menu also includes: "I Love Lucy Live" (Dec. 26-29, Merriam Theater); "Jersey Boys" (Dec. 11- Jan. 5, Forrest Theatre); and Cirque √Čloize "Cirkopolis" (March 11-16, Merriam).
