A Chester man was charged with murder Thursday in a shooting incident that left one man dead and an 82-year-old woman - who was watching television inside her home in the middle of the day - in critical condition.

Demetrius Jones, 21, died at Crozer-Chester Medical Center shortly before 10 p.m., about 81/2 hours after the shooting, police said.

Edith Hardy, who was inside her house in the 100 block of West 22d Street when a stray bullet came through a window and struck her in the neck, remained in critical condition at Crozer-Chester.

On Thursday, a warrant was issued for Naim T. Williams, 18, charging him with murder, aggravated assault, and illegally carrying a weapon as a convict.

According to the court affidavit, in a police interview, Williams' mother said her son had told her that Jones had "pulled a gun on him, so he ducked and shot at him."

She told police that when she informed him that a woman had been shot, he said, "If I did that, I didn't mean to."

Two other shooting incidents occurred earlier Wednesday, one in the same neighborhood, although police said they had not determined whether any of the shootings were related.

At 3:10 a.m., a man in the 300 block of West 22d Street answered a knock at the door and was shot in the chin by one of two unidentified men. He was taken to Crozer-Chester and is in stable condition.

At 11:30 a.m., at 11th and Upland Streets, a 35-year-old man was struck in the right leg by a bullet fired by someone wearing an orange construction vest and black face mask. He was reported in stable condition at Crozer-Chester.

Police were seeking Williams and continuing their investigation. They asked that anyone with information call 610-447-8429 or 610-891-4708.
