After pitching a three-hit shutout against her team's league rival, Katie Wenger unabashedly declared her fielders' defense "on fire."

Then the Agnes Irwin righthander said that she loved them.

The junior's enthusiasm was well warranted Thursday afternoon, as the host Owls defeated Episcopal Academy, 2-0, in an Inter-Ac League softball game.

The Agnes Irwin victory snapped the Churchwomen's four-game winning streak and avenged a season-opening loss to them.

"I can throw any pitch and I know that if I mess up that no matter what, they have my back," Wenger said. "They were diving. They were doing crazy stuff. It's great to see."

One of the defensive stars for Agnes Irwin (7-2 overall, 4-2 Inter-Ac) was senior rightfielder Alex Pew. She made two especially big sliding plays in the outfield, one in the second inning and another in the sixth.

"I sort of just saw where the ball was going and booked after [it]," Pew said. "I wasn't about to let anything drop."

It wasn't just Pew who played well in the field for the Owls, however. Almost every ball that Episcopal put in play was hit hard, requiring Agnes Irwin fielders to stay on their toes.

"It was great," senior shortstop Lauren Fortunato said. "Just seeing your teammates make all the plays and everything was just so positive."

Pew also had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the second. She grounded out to second base, knocking in Emily Speakman, who had singled, stolen second, and advanced to third on an error.

The Owls added an insurance run in the next inning. Fortunato led off with a triple and scored on a suicide squeeze by Taylor Lord.

"It's fun to win," Fortunato said. "We just played our game."

Both pitchers showed excellent command. Alex Viscusi struck out 12 for Episcopal (7-3, 5-2), and Wenger forced 13 groundouts.

In the Inter-Ac, the Owls are a half-game behind the Churchwomen and two games behind first-place Penn Charter, which is undefeated in league play.

Agnes Irwin is scheduled to face Penn Charter on May 14. In the teams' previous meeting, the Quakers won, 9-6.
