Gizmo Guy's Mother's Day gift guide

MOTHER'S DAY is nigh. Whatcha getting yours?

The gift of a gizmo lasts much longer than flowers or candy and reminds her of your love for months and years to come. Gadgets such as these:

CASING THE JOINT: Nothing adds personality to a boring, black-toned tablet computer or smartphone like a designer case. Take, please, the smile-inducing polka-dot covers Kate Spade New York has newly summoned up for the smaller, 7-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet. Nab one on Amazon for $69.99; for a mere $159, you can fill the case with the sharp-screened and reasonably well-featured tablet itself.

Also catching our eye is the handsome Atelier Clutch for the iPhone 5. The case boasts soft beige leather on the outside, microsuede inside. $49.99 at iluv.com.

TV TO GO: Is mom a fan of daytime TV? Plugging in a tiny Escort MobileTV tuner ($99.99 at crutchfield.com) turns an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a mini-TV set. (Newest Apple products need an adapter.)

The device tunes a new breed of broadcast mobile digital TV channels and doesn't use a phone's data minutes. It also runs on its own battery power for about 2.5 hours between charges (longer on an iPad with power sharing).

In Philadelphia, the Escort services daily programming from NBC 10 ("The Today Show," "Days of Our Lives," "Steve Harvey," "Ellen DeGeneres," etc.), Fox 29 ("Good Day Philadelphia," "Wendy Williams," "Dr. Oz" and three different judge shows), and the cartoon-laden Qubo 61 channel.

SEALED WITH A KISS: Great for the mom who cooks in bulk, a Waring Pro Pistol Vac Professional Vacuum Sealer System ($69.99) lets her bag and freeze quarts and gallons of good stuff in cost-efficient, taste-preserving fashion.

Though it resembles a hair dryer, the battery-powered (rechargeable) Sealer's sole function is to extract air through a special valve in Pistol Vac storage bags. Billed BPA-free and safe for freezing, boiling and microwaving, the bags (24 supplied) are reusable and also replaceable at Waringpro.com for about $1 a piece.

Cuisinart's new Fresh Edge Storage System also uses air extraction to lock freshness into foods stored in dishwasher/freezer/microwave-safe 32-, 64- and 103-ounce clear containers. Vacuum sealing is accomplished here with a lid-mount hand pump. Six- and eight-piece sets are $49.99-$59.99 and should be available in stores soon.

FUZZY WUZZIES: Does mom like to pad around the house in fuzzy slippers? Now she can bring the same comfort and good vibes to her computer station with the GoSmart RestPad, a generously oversize, nonslip mouse pad with an equally accommodating wrist rest made of soft, breathable and washable sheepskin. The pad feels cozy and helps prevent repetitive wrist injury. A GoSmart Pad normally costs $34.95 (plus $10 shipping) at Amazon, but entering code GSMD2013 at checkout saves 25 percent on purchases through May 13.

MOTHER'S LITTLE HELPER: Lightweight yet powerful, easily re-hung and recharged on a wall mount, the Dyson DC 44 Animal Digital Slim Cordless Vacuum Cleaner earns more use than any big upright or canister vac. Bed, Bath & Beyond is offering the Animal as part of a 20 percent off Dyson vac and fan sale (thanks, moms) through May 12, reducing the toll to $319.99. A less feature-ladened DC 35 variant has been cut to $263.99.
