Wed. S.J. boys and girls: Paul VI tops Eustace

Junior leftfielder Eric Straub rapped a run-scoring single with two out in the sixth inning, allowing Paul VI to defeat host Bishop Eustace, The Inquirer's third-ranked baseball team in South Jersey, 2-1, in an Olympic Conference National Division game Wednesday.

Senior starter Dominic Disirri kept the Crusaders' bats quiet, striking out seven for the complete-game victory. Senior Nick Gallo also drove in a run for the Eagles, sending Bishop Eustace to its third loss in two weeks.

In other Olympic action:

AJ Wright homered and doubled for Cherry Hill West, and the Lions overcame two Camden Catholic homers to win on the road, 11-7. The senior second baseman finished 3 for 3 and drew two walks, knocking in a game-high five runs.

Junior Jordan Friedman hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to send Cherry Hill East past visiting Shawnee, 8-6. Nick DiEva earned the win for the Cougars.

Cape-Atlantic. Buena pitchers Marco Rios and Lenny Coulter combined for a five-inning no-hitter, shutting down host Bridgeton in an 18-0 triumph. Jared Corniel led the Chiefs with three RBIs.

Boys' Lacrosse

Egg Harbor Township's Ryan King scored at the final buzzer, holding off Absegami's furious fourth-quarter rally as the Eagles got the better of their hosts in an 11-10 thriller in the Cape-Atlantic American Division.

The Braves trailed, 10-5, entering the final stanza, before Absegami's Chris Henchy tied the game with a minute to play. Egg Harbor Township made one final offensive push, and King ripped in an unassisted shot from the corner as time expired.

Nonleague. Ten players scored for St. Augustine as the Hermits dispatched host Peddie School in a 13-1 rout. Dean DiSimone, Joseph Eisele, and Mike Sutton led the way with two goals apiece.

Softball

Haddon Heights hurler Shayla Sweeney stymied rival Haddonfield from the circle and contributed at the plate, too, in the Garnets' 10-0 home victory in the Colonial Conference.

The senior tossed a no-hitter, fanning six in five innings, and launched a two-run homer for her 100th career hit.

Tri-County. Erynn Sobieski allowed just one hit over seven innings, mowing down Kingsway in a 4-0 win for visiting GCIT. Sobieski also homered and drove in three runs to spark the offense.

Cape-Atlantic. Millville exploded out of the gate, scoring five runs in the first inning to defeat host Hammonton, 7-2. Amanda Buckson doubled and had three RBIs for the Thunderbolts.

Girls' Lacrosse

Freshman Alex Fitzpatrick scored a game-high six goals as Northern Burlington hit the road and defeated Maple Shade, 19-12, in a Burlington County League Liberty Division contest.

Joan Logan chipped in with five more goals for the Greyhounds.

Nonleague. Sterling career scoring leader Tori Shinkowitz netted six goals in the Silver Knights' 12-10 win over visiting Gloucester Catholic.
