Agenda: Broad Street Run

Posted: May 03, 2013

AGENDA

What: 34th annual Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run

When: Sunday, 8:30 a.m.

Where: The 10-mile race begins at Broad Street and West Fisher Avenue. The finish line is approximately one-quarter mile inside the main gate of the Philadelphia Navy Yard, at the southern end of Broad Street.

Participants: Nearly 40,000 runners expected for the sold-out race.

Weather forecast: Sunny with light winds. Start of race, 55 degrees.

Security information: There is no specific threat to Philadelphia, according to authorities, but there are enhanced security measures. All runners using gear-check on race day must pack their gear in clear bags provided at the race expo.

Before the race, runners and spectators should sign up to receive emergency text alerts by visiting www.readynotifypa.org. This is how officials will alert runners and spectators if there is an emergency.

If you see something suspicious on race day, report it to a police officer or call 9-1-1. Officers will be along the course and at water stations.

Three evacuation shelters will be open along the race course. Please report to one of these locations if you need to seek shelter: Benjamin Franklin High (Broad and Spring Garden); School for Creative and Performing Arts (Broad and Christian Streets); South Philadelphia High (Broad and Snyder Streets).

No bags, backpacks, coolers are

allowed in the Navy Yard.

Where to park: With limited parking in the start area, runners are advised to park for free near the finish area (Broad and Pattison) and take the SEPTA Broad Street line to the start.

Where to watch: Avoid the starting

area. Wait until the field thins out. Unlike a parade, you don't need to be up high; stay at street level so you can cheer on the runners. Here are some good viewing locations, most near SEPTA stops:

* Temple University

* Broad and Spring Garden

* Vine Street

* City Hall

* South Broad Street

* Finish area in the Navy Yard
