When Jason Roselli settled into the batter's box in the seventh inning on Sunday, he figured something special was about to happen.
He was right.
For the wrong reason.
"I thought it was going to be my last at-bat as a PVI student," said Roselli, a senior second baseman for Paul VI.
As it turns out, that at-bat was the start of a remarkable playoff run for Roselli and the Eagles.
The No. 13 seed in the Non-Public South A tournament, Paul VI began the postseason with a 12-13 record and zero fanfare.
But the Eagles have upset fourth-seeded Red Bank Catholic - at the time, the No. 9 team in the state in the Newark Star Ledger rankings - as well as fifth-seeded Immaculata to advance to Friday's sectional semifinals against top-seeded Gloucester Catholic.
