S. Jersey Girls: Tues. S.J. girls: Sacred Heart grabs Non-Public B crown

With Sacred Heart's fielding behind her, Rosie La Grotta did not need a strikeout to pitch a shutout in a 7-0 victory Tuesday against St. Joseph in the South Jersey Non-Public B softball final at Buena.

Trailing, 4-0, in the sixth inning, St. Joseph loaded the bases with one out. La Grotta induced a ground ball, which turned into a force out at the plate, and then centerfielder Gabby Castellini made a catch diving to her right on a line drive to end the threat.

"We had some fabulous defense," Sacred Heart coach Les Olson said. "We definitely flashed some leather behind Rosie today."

La Grotta helped herself at the plate, going 2 for 4, including a two-run double. She also scored twice.

Sacred Heart's Lauren Dwyer also had a pair of hits and two RBIs.

"Today was a team effort with contributions throughout the lineup," Olson said.

Sacred Heart will play North Jersey Non-Public B champion Lodi Immaculate on Saturday for the state championship for the second straight year. Sacred Heart won last year's matchup, 3-1.

Group 4. Washington Township's Kristen Turner doubled in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, and the Minutemaids rolled to a 6-2 win in the state Group 4 semifinals at New Egypt.

Washington Township, the South Jersey Group 4 champ, will play Watchung Hills on Saturday for a state championship.

South Jersey Non-Public A. Paul VI's Alexa Toner lost a pitchers' duel in the South Jersey Non-Public A championship game at St. John Vianney, 1-0.

Toner gave up one run on four hits and a walk in six innings. She struck out two.

St. John Vianney's Katie Beriont held Paul VI to three hits and a walk and struck out three in seven shutout innings.

Brielle Pietrafesa was the only Paul VI batter to reach base twice, going 1 for 2 with a walk.

Helena Coppola knocked in Amanda Durham for the game's only run in the third inning.

Group 2. South Jersey Group 2 champion Buena lost in the state semifinals against Robbinsville, 4-0.

Lauren Fischer gave up one hit and one walk in seven innings for Central Jersey Group 2 champion Robbinsville.

Ashley Surran had Buena's only hit, and Samantha Fiocchi drew the walk.

Group 3. A pair of ninth-inning errors led to two runs for Wall, the Central Jersey Group 3 champ, ending GCIT's season with a 5-3 loss at Lenape in the Group 3 semifinals.

South Jersey Group 3 champion GCIT had tied the game in the seventh inning when Claire Lukas hit a two-run homer.
