NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving is preaching patience on the part of 76ers fans when it comes to the team's new general manager, Sam Hinkie.

Erving, 63, believes that the Sixers made the right move in hiring Hinkie, a former Houston Rockets executive.

"I think that the ownership group has an agenda set for winning," Erving said. "What happened to us last year with getting damaged goods [in center Andrew Bynum], hopefully it will only happen once. That's the extent of that learning curve. Hopefully, we can be a contender under this ownership group . . . They have a commitment to Philadelphia and I think they'll fulfill it."

Erving was at Xfinity Live in South Philadelphia on Wednesday night for a private screening of a new documentary about him, The Doctor, which can be seen Monday on NBA TV. The film shows the life of the Philadelphia legend behind the scenes.

Dr. J captivated basketball fans in five seasons in the ABA and 11 seasons with the Sixers in the NBA. He scored 30,026 points as a professional.

The soaring 6-foot-6 forward out of Massachusetts played in 11 consecutive NBA All-Star Games and helped the Sixers win their last championship in 1983.

Erving was asked how he felt about Hinkie's new approach to the organization and his ability in the world of analytics.

"Analytics? You want to explain what that is?" Erving asked. "Analytics is the kind of thing that only matters if you win. I would be a proponent of that if the team wins."

Erving has served as an adviser to the Sixers since May 2012. He told reporters in April that he wouldn't mind playing a bigger role with the team.
