A 10-year-old boy was killed and another youth was injured when two vehicles involved in an accident swerved onto a sidewalk Monday afternoon in Chester, police said.

About 4 p.m., a red Ford F-350 and a dark-burgundy Chevrolet Monte Carlo collided in the intersection of Ninth Street and Highland Avenue.

Both vehicles veered onto the Highland Avenue sidewalk behind a corner pizza shop, said Kent Drake, owner of Just Pizza.

The truck rolled over the 10-year-old, who leaped to his feet and tried to run before collapsing nearby, said Drake, who was outside and witnessed the mayhem.

The other boy, Tyvaun Fryson, 11, was struck by one of the vehicles but was able to run home a few houses down on Highland, Drake said.

A third boy jumped out of the way. He said they were walking to a barbershop across the street from the pizza place when the accident happened.

A nurse was close by and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the gravely wounded boy. Both children were taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where the 10-year-old was pronounced dead.

The truck crashed through a chain-link fence behind Just Pizza and crashed into two of Drake's cars and a shed containing a third car.

Police towed away both vehicles. Drake said both drivers got out of their vehicles and remained at the scene.

Both drivers were taken for questioning, police said.

The 10-year-old boy lived on Sixth Street. Family members there declined to comment.

Tyvaun's mother, Tiesha Spriggs, 35, said the intersection is dangerous, with cars speeding all the time.

"Just slow down," she begged motorists.
