THE FIRST DAY of summer once again marked the first day of pool season in Philadelphia, as the city began opening its 70 public pools.

On Thursday in Mayfair, city officials kicked off the 2013 season with the opening of Vogt Recreation Center. Seven other pools were opened yesterday and 17 more will open this weekend. The remaining pools will be opened by July 1.

Hours of operation for public pools this summer will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Individual pools' schedules may vary.

Swimming lessons, lifeguard training and family swim will be offered throughout the summer.

To find the closest public pool and for more information on lessons and programs, go to http://ph.ly/pools and search for "aquatics" facilities.
