Dionisio Garcia Aponte, 83, of Pemberton, an Army veteran, died Thursday, June 20.

Mr. Aponte was a coordinator at the New Lisbon Developmental Center for a number of years after his career in the Army before retiring in the mid-1990s, his son Michael said.

Born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, Mr. Aponte was the oldest of 10 children and joined the Army when he was 18. He was a 20-year veteran who served a tour in Korea and three tours in Vietnam.

Michael Aponte said his father valued his time in the Army because it afforded him an opportunity. He said his father grew up very poor.

While stationed in Salzburg, Austria, he married his wife of 54 years, Annie Marie.

Besides his son, Mr. Aponte is survived by sons Karl and Joseph; daughters Patricia, Christina, and Maria Copestick; eight siblings; and 11 grandchildren. His wife died in 2010.

A visitation was set from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the Lankenau Funeral Home, 31 Elizabeth St., Pemberton, before an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Ann's Church, 22A Trenton Rd., Browns Mills.
