Woman's body found in Delco apartment

Police in Chester are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found Thursday in an apartment complex.

Commissioner Joseph Bail said the department received a call about 9:15 a.m. to check on the welfare of a resident in the Wallingford Estates Apartments, 2701 Madison St. They are not releasing the identity of the woman pending notification of family. The woman had had several illnesses, police said.

Police were met at the scene by a man they identified as Patrick Michael Smith, 28. He was taken into custody on parole violations, police said. Police did not disclose the man's relationship with the woman.

Felix Cruz, a maintenance worker at the complex of eight four-story buildings, said the woman was in her 50s and had moved in a couple of months ago with a son in his late 20s.

"She is a nice lady," Cruz said. "She made me brownies once in a while."

The family was interviewed at the police station, and detectives talked to neighbors in the area, Bail said.

"We need the medical examiner to tell us what happened," Bail said about the cause of death. A medic from Crozer-Chester Medical Center pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

The body was removed about 2 p.m. Neighbors described the complex as quiet and neat.

"This is really scary," said Priscilla Thompson, a resident who did not know the woman. "To see something like this happen is tragic."
