New SEPTA fares effective Monday

Posted: June 28, 2013

SEPTA RIDERS WILL have one more weekend to stock up on tokens before the transportation company issues its first fare hikes in three years Monday.

In addition to tokens, SEPTA will implement increases to cash fares, TransPasses and Regional Rail travel.

* The cost of a token will jump a quarter from $1.55 to $1.80.

* Cash fares on transit lines will increase from $2 to $2.25.

* Regional Rail lines will have a variety of fare increases, ranging from 25 cents to $2.

* SEPTA will eliminate Zone 5 fares, most of which will be folded into Zone 4.

* The cost of a transfer will remain $1.

Further fare increases will be implemented along with the New Payment Technology plan in 2014. The NPT will eliminate tokens and allow customers to pay with a variety of methods, including debit and credit cards.

When that system is implemented, the cash fare will jump another quarter to $2.50 to encourage riders to use NPT.
